When Do You Need a Permit for a Dumpster Rental?

Dumpster permits are generally only required if you are placing your roll off container directly on a street, sidewalk or any type of public property. These are commonly referred to as street or right-of-way permits and are issued by your city’s public works or building department.

If you are placing your dumpster in your driveway or a privately owned space, you will not need a street permit. If your neighborhood has a homeowners association, you may also need permission from them before placing a dumpster on a residential street.

What You’ll Need to Request a Dumpster Permit

Before you call, gather the details of your project. Also, keep your dumpster’s dimensions in mind to ensure it won’t obstruct any property in your desired placement area. Having this information ready to go will make it easy to get your dumpster permit.

  • Dumpster rental company’s name and phone number
  • Property owner or applicant’s name, address and phone number
  • Start and end dates of your rental period
  • Exact address and detailed description of placement location

How to Obtain a Dumpster Permit

The permit process varies from city to city. In some places, the responsibility for obtaining a permit is on the company providing the dumpster, in which case you won’t have to get one yourself. In other locations, the customer is responsible for obtaining the permit.

To find out if your location requires a dumpster rental permit, who is responsible for it and how to apply for one, follow the steps below or give us a call and we’ll help you out.

Step 1: Find Out if Your Location Requires a Dumpster Permit

Give us a call at 888-601-0677 and one of our team members will be happy to help identify a dumpster rental permit need for your area.

Step 2: Contact Your Public Works Department and Homeowners Association

If you are responsible for obtaining a street permit, contact your city’s public works or building department. They will provide you with the appropriate form to fill out. Depending on the city, this process can be done in person, over the phone or online.

Processing times can vary between cities. For that reason, we recommend applying for a permit at least a week before you need the bin. While most applications can be completed in a day, it may take time to enforce no parking zones and create space on the street for your dumpster.

Additionally, if your neighborhood has a homeowners association you should double-check their bylaws to ensure you can keep your dumpster on the street or in your driveway.

Step 3: Schedule Your Dumpster Delivery

Once you’ve received your permit, place your order online or give us a call at 888-601-0677 and one of our team members will be happy to help place your order and coordinate your dumpster delivery and pickup.  See our Permit Blog on our Blogs page for additional information.
